    2008, 29(6): 36-43 .
    Abstract ( 2274 )   PDF (1008KB) ( 2528 )
Abstract: Based on the publicly available financial data of Chinese listed companies from 2001 to 2006, two factors capturing firms’ competitive strategy tendency are contructed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). These factors are then used in empirical models to explore the effect on the short term performance and the sustainability of firm performance. The results indicate that although both low cost and differentiation strategies have a positive effect on short term performance, the firms pursuing a differentiation strategy have higher performance than firms pursuing a low cost strategy. It is found that only the differentiation strategy allows a firm to achieve and sustain superior performance in the long range, because the advantages from low cost strategy are easily imitative and the competitive edges based on the differentiation strategy are difficultly imitative. In sum, the differentiation strategy is better than the low cost strategy at the aspect of achieving and maintaining sustainable competitive advantage.

    2008, 29(6): 44-51 .
    Abstract ( 2038 )   PDF (1105KB) ( 2863 )
Abstract: The effects between Discontinuous Innovation Orientation (DIO) and Technology-based Venture Performance (TVP) are analyzed based on the empirical study of 176 TVPs. A structural model of DIO and TVP is put forward and a survey to examine the model is conducted accordingly. Results suggest that there are the direct effect and indirect effect between DIO and TVP, with the firm capability as an intermediating factor. Uncertainties have modulating effects both on the relation between DIO and firm capabilities, and on the relation between firm capabilities and TVP. It is concluded that the technology-based ventures should follow discontinuous-innovation-oriented strategies to improve their performance under the condition of high uncertainty.

    2008, 29(6): 82-88 .
    Abstract ( 2076 )   PDF (1395KB) ( 2653 )
Abstract: Under the new trade theory, import products boost economic growth through its endogenous technology spillovers. The technology spillover effects associate with the trade structure, and need a certain combination of human capital. Based on experience data of China in 1980-2006, it is found that capital goods, intermediate goods, and imports all have a long-term, stable effect on the technological progress. Chinese import has the technology spillovers, and the structure of human capital and the level of human capital directly determine the effects of import trade technological spillovers. Contrastively, intermediate import goods have more spillover function than capital import goods; there is no a two-way causal relationship between import trade and technological advances, and virtuous cycle has not formed between trade structure improvement and the technological progress. In light of these conclusions, some relevant policy recommendations are put forward.

    2008, 29(6): 137-144 .
    Abstract ( 1862 )   PDF (1134KB) ( 2513 )
Abstract: Today, there were few systematic empirical researches directly linking the balance of the two learning with organizational performance. Six hundred and seventy seven employees from 10 cities in China answered the questionnaire. The results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) showed that exploration learning and exploitation learning were two sides of enterprise leaning rather than two end point of a continuum. The results of Hierarchical Regression Analysis (HRA) showed that exploration learning and exploitation learning were significantly positively related to finance performance. And the results also showed that there were positive and significant interaction effects between exploration learning and exploitation learning for finance performance. And the difference between exploitation learning and exploration learning was non-significantly related to the finance performance. The main implication was that Chinese enterprises should improve the level of exploitation learning before strengthening exploration learning.
