An empirical study of innovation objectives, knowledge sources and innovation success
Wang Yueheng, Wang Yi, Li Jizhen
    2015, 36(1): 8-17.
    Abstract ( 1103 )
Due to the limitation of firms' own knowledge and capability, innovation search has become an effective method for firms to obtain necessary resources and pursue innovation development. Existing researches have shown that the innovation search strategies adopted by firms have significant impacts on the innovation outcome. By adopting an open innovation model, firms would gain accesses to resources that are previously hard to get, generate certain impacts on driving forces of internal innovation, and enhance innovation performance. Furthermore, studies regarding firms' cognitive processes have also demonstrated that increasing innovation search breadth is important for alleviating cognitive biases. When facing the uncertainty of innovation activities, firms may seek for broader innovation search. While pursuing multiple innovative objectives, firms could also increase their chances of innovation success with more knowledge sources. By studying the relationship among innovation objective, knowledge source and innovation outcome, this paper examines the impact of innovation search breadth on innovation success and verifies the positive effectiveness of innovation search breadth. Our study mainly addresses the following three research questions: first, would more innovation objectives increase the possibility of innovation success? Second, would more knowledge sources increase the possibility of innovation success? Moreover, would the aforementioned two relationships be affected by single dependency? In order to answer these three questions, this paper builds a theoretical framework through a combination of economic and statistical analyses, and conducts empirical analyses on a large data set of 2008 Chinese CIS (which includes data on 870 firms in 30 manufacturing segment industries) to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of innovation search breadth. Our study finds that the breadth of innovation objectives is positively related to the innovation outcome, i.e., the more innovation objectives a firm has, the more likely its innovation would be successful; the breadth of knowledge sources is also found to be positively related to the innovation outcome, i.e., the more knowledge sources a firm utilizes, the more likely its innovation would be successful; moreover, dependence on single knowledge source has a negative yet not reversing moderating effect on knowledge source's positive impact on innovation success. Robustness checks including using alternative variables and grouping samples by different categories further support the results of our study. This paper shows that positive effectiveness of innovation search breadth does exist among Chinese manufacturing firm: both innovation objective breadth and knowledge source breadth have positive relationship with the outcome of firms' innovation activities; meanwhile, if a firm relies highly on a small number of innovation knowledge resources, such single dependence would reduce the positive effect of knowledge source breadth.

Yang Jing, Liu Qiuhua, Shi Jianjun
    2015, 36(1): 18-25.
    Abstract ( 1369 )
In the field of corporate environment management research, it is widely recognized to consider environment issues on the corporate strategy level. However, the literature about contingency of positive effect of green innovation strategy is very limited. Based on the natural resource based theory of Hart (1995) and the complementary assets theory of Teece (1986), we empirically studied the impact of corporate green innovation strategy on enterprise value, furthermore, we explored the influence mechanism of internal critical capabilities and resources (innovation ability and organization redundancy) on impact of corporate green innovation strategy on enterprise value. Using method of content analysis, we collected the public available data of listed companies in Jiangsu Province. The empirical results showed that: (1) at this period in China, green Innovation strategy and enterprise value was negatively correlated significantly; (2) innovation ability had positive moderate effect on the relationship between green Innovation strategy and enterprise value; (3) for the relationship between green Innovation strategy and enterprise value, non-precipitation redundant resources had positive moderate effect, while precipitation redundant resources had no significant moderate effect; (4) further three-way interaction analysis found out that with more non-precipitation redundant resources, the positive moderating effect of innovation ability on the relationship between green Innovation strategy and enterprise value became stronger. The conclusion of this study deepened and expanded the natural resource based theory, provided a useful reference for the green practice of enterprises.

Progress and future agenda on relationship between strategic orientation conversion and innovation process integration
Jiang Junfeng, Han Mingjun, Cheng Xiaoyan
    2015, 36(1): 43-53.
    Abstract ( 1038 )
The adjustment in the period of transformation causes lots of studies on the strategic orientation conversion and innovation process integration. And they all boil down to the single direction process from strategic orientation based on product innovation characteristics to the integration of innovation process. While the dynamic capability in the innovation process is the key factor impacting the strategic orientation conversion from lots of practice in product portfolio development, it requires us to upgrade our single way process to a two-way equilibrium module. Through intermediary effect of product portfolio innovative characteristics, we establish a two-way equilibrium analysis framework and make an overview of current study status at strategic orientation conversion, integration of innovation process and the relationships between the two. In the end, we point out that it is necessary to build up a foundation framework of innovation process integration on studying bidirectional interaction between strategic orientation conversion and innovation process integration. Besides, we also work out the calculating experiment theory to study the bi-directional equilibrium fluctuation under current industry phase and uncertain policy environment which is also the focus of future research.

    Feng Haiyan
    2015, 36(1): 54-62.
    Abstract ( 1462 )
In the background of knowledge economy, the national innovation ability directly determines the country's level of economic development, industrial structure transformation. Colleges and universities reflect directly the national innovation ability level, and they are one of the main research subjects of the national innovation capacity, so they largely determine the level of national innovation level. At present, the creative ability levels vary, and the methods for assessing the performance of team innovation has not met the unified requirements, while the assessment is mainly based on the level of the academic leaders, the number of the backbone of scientific research, number and grade of application for scientific research and the innovation ability of universities will be promoted simply by increasing the amount of investment research and the high level of recruiting innovative talents, ignoring promotion of the innovation environment, innovation climate, innovation communication, and failure to make targeted enhancement according to the characteristics of creative teams and the creative team environment. In this paper, the evaluation system of innovation ability of colleges and universities are taken as the research objects, and throughreferring to the literature related to the characteristic of university innovation team and management methods at home and abroad, analyzing the applicability of the analysis method, and selecting the PDCA method as the method of theoretical analysis, this paper analyzes the existing problems of university innovation performance appraisal management in combination with the PDCA method, and perfects the research on the innovation performance appraisal of university evaluation and the PDCA circulation theory. It also finds out the main factors influencing the lifting capability of team innovation by applying the PDCA circulation method, analyzes the reason of their coming into being, and puts forward the main measures to enhance the innovation capability. This paper conducts an empirical research on the innovation performance appraisal management of a university team in Beijing, evaluates the scientific research innovation performance of the colleges and universities by means of PDCA circulation, finds out the main problems of the University Innovation Team existed, makes a further analysis by using the analysis method of causality diagram, finds out the main reason for the existence of innovation team performance and proposes targeted improvement measures. For the more prominent problem,a second PDCA circulation is made for analyzing the problem, finding out the main reasons for its existence, and putting forward the measures of improvement. The comprehensive evaluation method is used to evaluate the innovation ability level before and after the application of PDCA circulation method, and the evaluation results show that the innovation ability is improved obviously by using the PDCA circulation method, and it is helpful to enhance the university innovation capability levelby using the PDCA circulation method. Finally, this paper puts forward the suggestions and measures to enhance innovation capability of the university team. According to the analysis of the literature and practice, the paper puts forward four measures for improvement of the innovation ability of colleges and universities, namely the innovation topic selection, training of talents, team building and environment construction. In summary, this paper provides a new method of university innovation performance appraisal management, and demonstrates the validity of the method through the empirical analysis. Because of the different emphasis in innovation, some problems exist in the appraisal by using this method, therefore, a large number of empirical analysis is needed to carry on a quantitative analysis, so as to find out the problems existed in the application of the method in similar problems. This is the deficiency of this paper.

Review and expansion of the organizational social capital from multilevel perspective
    Zhuang Yumei
    2015, 36(1): 97-103.
    Abstract ( 958 )
Organizational social capital is the resource which can bring the endogenous advantage. Its feature in originating from the individual interaction network determines its multi-level characteristics. But the research focusing on different levels and perspectives leads to the fuzzy framework of the concept. Based on the logic of the multilevel theory, the paper reviews the concept, emergence and efficiency from the multilevel perspective, illustrates the organizational social capital in the single level and the cross level. At last, the paper constructs an cross-level theoretical framework including its cross-level antecedents and outcomes, making clear the multilevel feature of the organizational social capital and the interrelations between the micro interaction and macro phenomena, and puts forward the problem to be advanced in the future.

Analysis of returns to scale of the biological institutes based on DEA method
    Yang Guoliang, Liu Wenbin
    2015, 36(1): 104-111.
    Abstract ( 777 )
This paper aims to analyze the returns to scale of 15 biological institutes in Chinese Academy of Sciences. Firstly, this paper proposed the indicators, including staff, research funding, SCI paper, high-quality paper and graduate training, etc., as the basis for this research. Secondly, this paper uses the methods proposed by Yang to determine directional RTS, optimal inputs direction and congestion effect to investigate the corresponding information of biological institutes. Based on the above analysis, we have the following findings: (1) we can detect the regions with increasing (constant, decreasing) directional returns to scale and the optimal input directions of each institute; (2) we find that directional congestion effect exists in some institutes, and the increase of inputs will cause the decrease of outputs. So these institutes should avoid increasing inputs further and investigate the deep reason for congestion so that the S&T resources can be used more efficiently.

A study on simulating energy security system of China
Guo Lingling, Wu Chunyou, Yu Jingtao
    2015, 36(1): 112-120.
    Abstract ( 1285 )
Energy supply security is the basis for sustainable development of national economy, and directly related to the country's stability and harmonization. In recent years, with the contradiction between supply and demand of energy resources being more serious, energy security gradually becomes the focus of academic research problems. This paper uses the System Dynamics Theory to construct the energy security system dynamics model of China, through regulating parameters of the industry, economy, population and environment subsystem in order to predict the dynamic changes of variables such as energy production, energy consumption, energy supply-demand gap and energy strategic reserve, and draws three development patterns of energy security system. The research results show that: if the control parameters are kept unchanged, the stability of Chinese current energy security system will be difficult to sustain; and if the control parameters are adjusted, we simulate two development patterns of energy security system under Scenario 1 and Scenario 2. Compared with scenario 'current', from a long-term perspective, the stability of energy security system under Scenario 1 is better because of an increase of the national energy strategic reserve; in the short term, the stability of energy security system under Scenario 2 is better due to continuous increase of energy production, but in the long run, the stability of Chinese energy security system will be threatened because of the national energy strategic reserve reduction. According to the results, the paper puts forward some measures for developing the energy security system stably and healthily, such as establishing national energy statistical management account, strengthening energy strategic reserve and speeding up new energy and renewable energy use.

Research on the impact of reference on citation
    Jiang Lei, Lin Deming
    2015, 36(1): 121-126.
    Abstract ( 1127 )
As an indispensable part of scientific papers, reference tends to be one of the important factors that decide the level of papers. Meanwhile, citation is one of the important indexes for paper evaluation. Is there a correlation between the two factors? In order to solve this problem, we study from two points: the correlation between the quantity of reference and citation; the correlation between the quality of reference and citation. Through the study, neither of the two aspects is obvious. So the correlation between reference and citation is not obvious, reference should be an index of paper evaluation system, independent of the citation indicator.

An empirical research on the effects of ambidexterity in strategic orientation on product innovation and business performance
    Li Wei
    2015, 36(1): 143-151.
    Abstract ( 1032 )
Being the core contents of strategic orientation (SO), the market orientation (MO) and the technology orientation play a significant role in the sustainable growth of scientific and technological (S&T) firms. This paper applies ambidexterity theory to the research of SO, trying to explore the effects of ambidexterity in "market-technology" orientation on product innovation and business performance. Relevant data about 228 S&T firms shows that the fitted ambidexterity of the two SOs yields positive effects on incremental product innovation (IPI), while the combined ambidexterity of the two SOs exerts impacts on breakthrough product innovation (BPI). The IPI and BPI play a respective mediating role in the relationships between fitted ambidexterity, combined ambidexterity and business performance. In the context of diverse environmental volatility, there are different relations between product innovation and business performance. The research results provide theoretical value and practical implications for S&T firms in terms of optimizing SO and improving product innovation and business performance.
