    Abstract ( 1881 )   PDF (1065KB) ( 2396 )
Abstract: The innovation capability is becoming more and more important for International Joint Venture (IJV) to build and maintain a competitive advantage. Host parent firms, which are in a vulnerable situation of technology and management in relation to the foreign parent company, must seek effective management ways to control over IJV in order enhance the learning and performance of IJV. This issue is urgent to solve both in theory and in practice, and is in the forefront of related research area. The impact of mechanisms for the formal and informal control by the host parent company on IJV technical innovation is discussed with 96 samples of IJV in South China. The results show that social control by the host parent company contributes to IJV internal knowledge integration and management innovation positively; knowledge integration played a role of intermediary in this process. It is proved that there exist mutual positive relations between formal and informal control of host parent companies, and formal control of host parent firms has a direct positive effect on IJV’ technical innovation.

    Abstract ( 1896 )   PDF (1551KB) ( 3021 )
Abstract: The panel data models is employed to conduct the econometric analysis upon the data concerning Total Factor Productivity(TFP) and types of R&D investment, etc. of eastern, central and western regions of China from 1995 to 2007, it is revealed that different types of R&D investment has a positive effect on TFP growth; however, spillover effects of R&D activities are different. The R&D cumulative investment from outside region (technology introduction costs) results in the largest effect on the TFP growth; R&D cumulative investment of universities and institutes leads to the smallest effect on the TFP growth; and the effect of enterprise R&D cumulative investment on the TFP growth lies in the middle between the two poles; The effect of the regional independent innovation on the TFP in the eastern region is larger than that in the central and the western regions; the effect of technical introduction on the TFP in the western region is larger than that in the central region, while the effect on the TFP in the central region is larger than that in the eastern region. At the same time, the R&D activities of the different types interact each other differently in terms of the degree and the direction, provide the reference for formulating policies of science and technology.

The real option valuation for the investment in technological innovation under asymmetric information

    Diao Lilin
    2010, 31(2): 35-41 .
    Abstract ( 1747 )   PDF (1540KB) ( 1989 )
Abstract: Technological innovation is a complicated system which is characterized by the uncertain products and market as well as irreversible investment. As a method of investment valuation under the uncertainty, a real option is widely applied to the investment of technological innovation. The fact that many firms deploy the principal-agent structure when making investment in technological innovation inevitably raises the problems of information asymmetry, such as the moral hazard and adverse selection of agents. The adverse selection model of the principal-agent framework is applied to the real option valuation of technological innovation investment. First, a real option valuation model is setup under symmetric information, which gives the boundary conditions of investment. In the case of information asymmetry, it is assumed that all of investment cost and part of investment benefit are in public to the both principal and agent while the rest of the benefit is only known by the agent. Under this premise, an adverse selection model with a continuum of possible types is developed by building the profit function based on the real option valuation. Consequently, the model gives the optimal contract of the agent and the investment boundary conditions of the principal. In the end, an example is taken to demonstrate the economic implication of the real option model under asymmetric information. Also, the two models developed under symmetric and asymmetric information are compared, from which, two findings are obtained. One is that all types of agents except the one with the highest productivity have a lower boundary value for the investment under asymmetric information than they do under symmetric information. The other is that all types of agents except the one with the lowest productivity are able to harvest a strictly positive information rent.

    Abstract ( 1770 )   PDF (973KB) ( 2303 )
Abstract: R&D and knowledge absorption, which are the majority sources for firms’ innovation, have a different effect on innovation performance. The efficiency of firms’ innovation is measured based on survey data using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The results show that only 4604% of samples lie on the efficiency frontier and the return of scale are decreasing. Lots of inputs have been wasted, especially the knowledge obtained from the cluster and university; and more than half of knowledge has not been fully utilized because of poor internal communication; furthermore, the patent output is shortage. It is also found that expect industry types, all the factors including scale of firms, property right, target markets, as well as whether or not has a own brand, have insignificant effects on the efficiency.

The forming mechanism and countermeasure of innovator’s dilemma

    Chen Kun
    2010, 31(2): 65-73 .
    Abstract ( 1712 )   PDF (1107KB) ( 2096 )
Abstract: Whether or not a low level of breakthrough innovation for Chinese firms is related with innovator’s dilemma remains unanswered. Based upon the Christensen’s innovator’s dilemma theory and Andrew S. Grove’s sincere belief about that only the paranoid could survive, the innovator’s dilemma is redefined from a generalized angle. The empirical conclusion indicates that most Chinese firms are sticking in the innovator’s dilemma; marketing tactic capability is a major factor which impedes Chinese firm’s breakthrough innovation; and adopting market paranoia could reverse the negative effect of marketing tactic capability on the breakthrough innovation and improve the positive effect of marketing strategic capability on the breakthrough innovation.

Verification for the mediating effect of quality management between advanced manufacturing technology and firm performance: A bootstrap-based structural equation modeling analysis

Li Junfeng, Long Yong, Yang Xiutai
    2010, 31(2): 74-85 .
    Abstract ( 1906 )   PDF (1743KB) ( 2373 )
Abstract: Based on Chongqing manufacturing firms, the mediating role of quality management between advanced manufacturing technology and firm performance is empirically studied by using the bootstrap-based structural equation modeling. The result of three-step mediation test indicates that the direct effect of advanced manufacturing technology on firm performance is insignificant. Advanced manufacturing technology has significant direct impacts on the quality management and the latter on the firm performance. Quality management practices fully mediate the relations between advanced manufacturing technology and firm performance. Further analysis on mediating effects shows that through its transmissive function on core and infrastructure practices of quality management, eventually advanced manufacturing technology indirectly improves firm performance via workforce management practice and process flow management practice.

    2010, 31(2): 94-104 .
    Abstract ( 1817 )   PDF (1130KB) ( 2275 )
Abstract: According to the scientific developmentview putting people first and aiming at the comprehensive, coordinattive and sustainable development, the comprehensive evaluation system of science and technology is established through widely choosing and filtrating targets, which is fit for 14 province districts. On the basis of the evaluating rules, such as science and technology input/output, impact of science and technology on the economy and society and so on, 14 province districts are classified as three categories-good, medium, and bad by the clustering method and the empirical research conducted on them puts the feasible advice forward using the established science and technology evaluation model based on the super-efficiency DEA. Its features and innovations are as follows: Firstly, it puts together the provinces whose science and technology strengths are close by the clustering method and the DEA is used to evaluate each category so that the phenomenon of anamorphic evaluation results for different kinds of evaluating objects will not happen. Secondly, it reveals the input redundancy and the output deficiency of science and technology for the province districts which don’t reach the optimal efficiency by calculating the input redundancy and the output deficiency. In the light of these results, the feasible advice is provided. Thirdly, according to the impact principle of science and technology on economy, the coordinative and sustainable development are taken into account and a target system of coordinative and sustainable development reflecting the connotation of scinetific development view is set up.

    2010, 31(2): 126-136 .
    Abstract ( 1765 )   PDF (1284KB) ( 2615 )
Abstract: Organizations across China have invested billions of yuans in ERP. But the potential business value of ERP cannot be fully realized until they are extensively assimilated in an organization, and the success cannot be claimed until technology assimilation is ultimately achieved by the organization. A sturctured theory and the concept of meta-structuring actions are drawn on to explain the importance of business-IT coordination mechanism-formal, informal, and high level for achieving higher levels of ERP assimilation within an organization. Survey data are utilized to test a Nomo-logical network of relationships between business-IT coordination mechanism and the extent of organizational assimilation of ERP. It is also offered guidance to the IT managers and practitioners.

    2010, 31(2): 137-146 .
    Abstract ( 1833 )   PDF (1628KB) ( 2654 )
Abstract: The complexity involving relationship between IT investment and firm performance is discussed from the perspective of IT management. Based on the theory of enterprise competence, the deep-seated mechanism of firm performance arising from IT investment is analyzed and then hypothesises on the relationship between IT investment and firm performance are introduced. Two paired samples from Chinese listed companies are used to test the assumptions. Results from nonparametric tests show that all of the profit ratios, such as ROA,ROS,OIA,OIS, and OIE in the research time window were significantly higher for the IT leaders when compared with the control sample of firms, while cost ratios, such as TOES and COGSS were significantly lower for the IT leaders sample. This shows that the transformation from IT investment to firm performance is a process that IT effectively supports and matches with other organizational resources and capabilities, that is, a process that IT bulids its capability.

    2010, 31(2): 147-153 .
    Abstract ( 1845 )   PDF (1026KB) ( 2621 )
Abstract: In February, 2006, Chinese Ministry of Finance issues a new accounting standard, Enterprise Accounting Principle No.3- investing real estate. In 2007, only two real estate listed companies introduced the fair value accounting, but 117 real estate listed companies adopted the historical cost accounting. Is this phenomenon a rational choice or tendency toward convergence for the real estate listed companies? Based on the clues to the rationality and bounded rationality, this phenomenon is analyzed by the canonical analysis and evolutionary game theory. The result shows that the accounting choices for Chinese real estate listed companies are bounded rationality, and there is a remarkable tendency toward convergence.

    Abstract ( 1808 )   PDF (1126KB) ( 2131 )
Abstract: Bidding decision-making of dynamic alliance of construction projects is a comprehensive evaluation process; it consists of many risk factors that need considering not only the strength of the dynamic alliance and the conditions of owner, but also the conditions of candidate projects and competition. By consulting related literatures published in the public at home and abroad and investigating the present situation of the construction market in China, expert knowledge is acquired, and based on which a index system is built to evaluate bidding risk factors of dynamic alliance of construction projects. Considering the fact that there is a mutually influencing and constraint relation among indexes and expert subjective evaluations often have nonlinear characteristics, the feasibility for using an Analytic Network Processl(ANP) method for the evaluation is researched and the application steps are specified. Case studies prove that ANP method can be used to rank many projects via bidding risk evaluation, the computation is simple, and it is applicable to manifold comprehensive evaluations.
