A research on building and testing management theory withthe sequential mixed method

Abstract

Abstract: Based on an analysis of the related literature and classical articles published on the five top management journals at home and abroad, this paper discusses the design strategies and application skills of sequential mixed methods research (SMMR) in building and testing management theory. We found that: (1) using SMMR to build and test management theory is based on the premise that researchers should select a management theory problem that is suitable for using SMMR to explore; (2) for different management issues, researchers should adopt different SMMR design strategies with different characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, applying conditions and application skills; (3) researchers should strictly comply with the writing mechanics and skills of SMMR; and (4) owing to a lack of high-level academic papers, there is an urgent need for Chinese scholars to learn and acquire how to use SMMR to build and test management theory.
