A study on technological trajectory of vehicle industry based on patent data

Abstract

Abstract: In order to solve the problems caused by conventional cars, car manufacturers have committed to cleaner energy vehicles and the development of a variety of engine technology. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the competition between different technological trajectories of vehicles industry, comparing the patent data of Chinese car manufacturer and using the patent data analysis to study the innovation strategies of car manufacturers over the period of 1995 to 2010. This analysis emphasizes the progressive diversification of firms' patent portfolios over the whole set of engine technologies and the differentiated strategic positioning of car manufacturers according to countries and regions.
