Research on the impact of corporate strategic radicalization on green innovation

Research on the impact of corporate strategic radicalization on green innovation

Abstract

Strategic choice is the starting point and foundation of corporate green innovation decisions. However, the impact of strategic radicalization—an important aspect of strategic choice—on corporate green innovation remains underexplored. This study empirically examined the effect of corporate strategic radicalization on green innovation, using a fixed effects model with data from Chinese A-share listed firms from 2013 to 2022. The findings indicated that:(1) strategic radicalization has a positive impact on green innovation, and this conclusion remains robust after a series of robustness tests;(2) moderation analysis shows that the positive impact of strategic radicalization on green innovation is strengthened by environmental regulation and weakened by organizational slack; and(3) heterogeneity analysis reveals that the positive effect of strategic radicalization on corporate green innovation is significant in manufacturing and technology-intensive firms, but not in non-manufacturing, labor-intensive, or capital-intensive firms. This research extends the study of the drivers of green innovation from the perspective of strategic characteristics. It will provide empirical evidence for governments to build sustainable development policy frameworks and assist companies in formulating green innovation strategies.

Abstract
面对资源与环境的双重约束,有效整合内部治理和外部规制,直接关系到企业绿色技术创新的积极性。基于制度规制理论与技术创新理论,以2009-2014年45家重污染行业沪深两市A股上市公司为样本,实证检验了公司董事会治理在环境规制对企业绿色技术创新影响中的作用机制。研究发现:环境规制本身对企业绿色技术创新呈正向影响,董事会治理对企业绿色技术创新呈正向显著影响,且董事会治理在环境规制对企业绿色技术创新影响中呈显著正向调节作用。研究结论表明:面对我国环境承载能力已达到或接近上限的客观现实,并举外部环境政策落实和提高董事会治理水平,对促进企业绿色技术创新,实现提质增效和减污排污具有重要意义。

Organizational adaptation is a topic that has received only limited and fragmented theoretical treatment. Any attempt to examine organizational adaptation is difficult, since the process is highly complex and changeable. The proposed theoretical framework deals with alternative ways in which organizations define their product-market domains (strategy) and construct mechanisms (structures and processes) to pursue these strategies. The framework is based on interpretation of existing literature and continuing studies in four industries (college textbook publishing, electronics, food processing, and health care).

Understanding sources of sustained competitive advantage has become a major area of research in strategic management. Building on the assumptions that strategic resources are heterogeneously distributed acrossfirms and that these differences are stable over time, this article examines the link betweenfirm resources and sustained competitive advantage. Four empirical indicators of the potential of firm resources to generate sustained competitive advantage-value, rareness, imitability, and substitutability-are discussed. Accepting a fixed trade-off between environmental regulation and competitiveness unnecessarily raises costs and slows down environmental progress. Studies finding high environmental compliance costs have traditionally focused on static cost impacts, ignoring any offsetting productivity benefits from innovation. They typically overestimated compliance costs, neglected innovation offsets, and disregarded the affected industry's initial competitiveness. Rather than simply adding to cost, properly crafted environmental standards can trigger innovation offsets, allowing companies to improve their resource productivity. Shifting the debate from pollution control to pollution prevention was a step forward. It is now necessary to make the next step and focus on resource productivity.
