Abstract

How local enterprises can successfully achieve technological innovation is an important issue in the research field of technological innovation. The "shared schema" can decipher the formation process of group cognition, which has more fundamental and essential significance for studying the implementation of "technological innovation" in local enterprises. Therefore, the paper took Gree, a typical enterprise in the local manufacturing industry, as the research object. From the perspective of "schema", the paper investigated the formation mechanism of group cognition among local enterprises. The research found the following:(1) The paper proposes a shared schema that drives the formation of group cognition. In the cognitive structure of local enterprises, there is a "world first" central driving schema that supports organizational innovation. The "world first" of "shared schema" reflects the basic schema values. The "central drive" reflects the basic schema structure. (2)It is industrial capital that has adopted behaviors consistent with the national innovation strategy in the process of technological innovation, forming a specific historical stage of local enterprises' "shared base model". Different from the previous research on state-owned enterprises, the research conclusion believes that the characteristics of state-owned enterprises, such as social responsibility, hard-working, and national responsibility, are not the key to the success of technological innovation of state-owned enterprises. The key to success is for industrial capital to adopt behaviors consistent with the national innovation strategy, which is the inherent reason for the presentation of the characteristics of state-owned enterprises. (3) The formation process of "shared schema" includes four stages:perception, absorption, solidification, and diffusion. Each stage does not play an equal role, and the "perception" stage is the key stage of the whole process. The political credit and national innovation strategy provided by the country are stabilized and unified through "perception". The "long" behavior consistent with the national innovation strategy was adopted to achieve technological breakthrough through endogenous accumulation. The research conclusions will provide some theoretical basis and insights for local manufacturing enterprises to promote the success of technological innovation in complex environments.

Abstract

Abstract

The present article introduced a recategorization model based on cognitive consistency to explore how new identities were assimilated into the self-concept, along with its attendant consequences on intergroup attitudes. The model specified four key concepts (self, attributes, old group, new group) as interconnected components, which explained how groups with self and shared attributes were connected through the principle of cognitive consistency, thereby forming self-concept, group stereotypes, and group identity. When group identity shifted, the degree of identification with the new group identity and the intergroup attitude depended on the (in)compatibility of the different social groups. This model expanded the scope of research on multiple identities. In addition to single recategorization and dual recategorization, there was a new way to recategorization which was transformed recategorization. And it played an important role in facilitating identity integration and thus contributed to reducing intergroup bias. Future research should provide more empirical evidence of the effectiveness of recategorization to enrich the boundary conditions of the recategorization.

Using the established definition of situated cognition in organizations as “the interaction of cognitive schemas and organizational context” (Lant 2002), we examine empirical case studies from the last 15 years to illustrate what situated cognitions in organizations might actually look like. Grounded in this research, we develop a framework that identifies how some specific forms of cognitive schemas (i.e., rule schemas, event schemas, person schemas) and specific contexts (e.g., physical contexts, institutional contexts) interact during sensemaking processes to give rise to momentary perceptions that we call situated cognitions. We present evidence that common patterns of interaction between schemas and context may occur during sensemaking in organizations. In terms of theoretical implications, our framework focuses attention on the specific interactions between context and cognition (rather than on context or cognition alone) that comprise situated cognitions, and helps to more concretely define situated cognitions as momentary or temporally bounded perceptions. We offer several practical implications of this framework for managers and suggest avenues for further elaboration on our ideas through research.

Schema theory posits that experiences of maltreatment result in the early development of maladaptive schemas (EMS; Young, Klosko, & Weishaar, 2003, Schema therapy: A practitioner's guide, The Guilford Press: New York, NY). EMS are organized by conditionality; unconditional schemas are theorized to develop early in childhood predominantly in response to experiences of parenting and conditional schemas are theorized to develop later in life in response to other relationships. Despite this distinction, minimal previous research has investigated their differential development. The current study examined the relative contributions of parental and other (peer and intimate partner) emotional maltreatment (EMT) in the differential development of unconditional and conditional schemas. Ninety-seven undergraduate students retrospectively reported their maltreatment experiences using the Lifetime Experiences Questionnaire and completed the Young Schema Questionnaire to measure EMS. Consistent with hypotheses, parental EMT was the strongest predictor of unconditional schemas. Unexpectedly, parental EMT also emerged as the strongest predictor of conditional schemas. Theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Innovation researchers recognize that the uncertainty with regard to the value-creating potential of product innovations increases with their technological novelty, and have argued that the usefulness and value of novel products are socially constructed. Despite this recognition, researchers have not explored how the outer form in which a technological innovation is embodied influences the processes through which the innovation’s value is constructed and perceived. In this paper we argue that by embodying novel technologies in objects with specific functional, symbolic, and aesthetic properties, innovating firms also endow their products with cues that trigger a variety of cognitive and emotional responses. Drawing on psychological research we articulate how such cognitive and emotional responses underlie initial perceptions of value and theorize how innovating firms can influence them through product form design. Our framework explains how product form contributes to perceptions of value by modulating the actual technological novelty of a product innovation and facilitating how customers cope with it. Our theoretical framework makes an important contribution to innovation research and practice because it articulates how product form can be used strategically to achieve specific cognitive and emotional effects and enhance the initial customer perceptions of the value of an innovation.
