Abstract: A cross-temporal meta-analysis is applied to analyze the relationship between leadership behavior and employee innovation based on present literatures. The trend of this relationship is also analyzed from the cross-cultural perspective before and after the financial crisis. The result shows that both transformational and transactional leadership have a positive effect on employee innovation and are contextually delimited; transformational leadership impacts on employee innovation quite significantly in the context of eastern culture, while transactional leadership has a stronger effect in the context of western culture; in the context of eastern culture, the effect of transactional leadership is strengthened while the effect of transformational leadership became weaker after suffering from financial crisis or facing high uncertain case. This result is different from the conclusion based on western cultural context; however it provides the empirical basis for the choice of leadership behavior in Chinese context.
