Abstract

Patient capital provides long-term and stable financial support for breakthrough innovation, which is crucial to the development of nations and enterprises. And institutional investors are one of the key targets for cultivating patient capital. Yet there is a scarcity of discussion regarding the impact of institutional investors on breakthrough innovation when they become common owners. We focused on the non-financial common institutional owners with characteristics of patient capital and investigated its impact on corporate breakthrough innovation by the samples of non-financial listed companies in Chinese A-share market from 2007 to 2022. The results of the empirically examination showed that: (1) Non-financial common institutional ownership significantly promotes corporate disruptive innovation; (2) non-financial common institutional owners promote breakthrough innovation by guiding and supervising the adjustment of corporate resource allocation and increasing funds and personnel to research and development (R&D) investment; executive innovation consciousness enhances the promotional effect while strategic aggressiveness suppresses it; and (3) it is more pronounced in growing companies, and non-high-tech companies; non-financial common institutional investors that have held shares for more than one year have a more significant promotional effect on corporate disruptive innovation activities. This paper has enriched the relevant research on the impact of common institutional ownership on innovation and it will provide practical evidence for guiding and regulating patient capital to empower the development of new productive forces.

Organizational adaptation is a topic that has received only limited and fragmented theoretical treatment. Any attempt to examine organizational adaptation is difficult, since the process is highly complex and changeable. The proposed theoretical framework deals with alternative ways in which organizations define their product-market domains (strategy) and construct mechanisms (structures and processes) to pursue these strategies. The framework is based on interpretation of existing literature and continuing studies in four industries (college textbook publishing, electronics, food processing, and health care).

Abstract

HIGGINS D, OMER T C, PHILLIPS J D. The influence of a firm's business strategy on its tax aggressiveness[J]. Contemporary Accounting Research, 2015, 32(2): 674-702.
We examine the relation between a firm's business and tax-planning strategies. To identify firms' business strategies, we use a comprehensive measure of business strategy based on the theoretical framework of Miles and Snow (1978, 2003). Specifically, we first investigate whether a firm's business strategy is associated with its level of tax avoidance. Next, we investigate the association between the firm's business strategy and the extent to which it avoids tax in an aggressive manner. We find that firms following Miles and Snows' Prospector (innovation and risk seeking) strategy avoid more taxes than both Defender firms (cost leadership and risk aversion) and firms following a more general (Analyzer) strategy. We find that Prospectors also appear to undertake more aggressive and less sustainable tax positions than Defenders. Thus, our business strategy measure appears not only to capture Prospectors' taking advantage of tax-planning opportunities that result from their innovation strategy but also reflects their greater willingness to undertake risk and deal with uncertainty.

DICKINSON V. Cash flow patterns as a proxy for firm life cycle[J]. The Accounting Review, 2011, 86(6): 1969-1994.
This study develops a firm life cycle proxy using cash flow patterns. The patterns provide a parsimonious indicator of life cycle stage that is free from distributional assumptions (i.e., uniformity). The proxy identifies differential behavior in the persistence and convergence patterns of profitability. For example, return on net operating assets (RNOA) does not mean-revert (spread of 7 percent after five years between mature and decline firms) when examined by life cycle stage, which has implications for growth rates and forecast horizons. Further, determinants of future profitability such as asset turnover and profit margin are differentially successful in generating increases in profitability conditional on life cycle stage. Finally, investors do not fully incorporate the information contained in cash flow patterns and, as a result, undervalue mature firms. The cash flow proxy is a robust tool that has applications in analysis, forecasting, valuation, and as a control variable for future research.
