Abstract: From the viewpoint of technical efficiency, the stochastic frontier model and the cross-province panel data in the year from 2001 to 2007 are utilized to study the spillover effect of Service Foreign Direct Investment (SFDI) in Chinese mainland. The empirical estimations not only show that average technical efficiency in the central and western region is significantly lower than that in eastern coastal regions, but also find that a significant inverse U-shape effect between technical efficiency of service industry and SFDI exists. Because the central and western region's service industry absorb few FDI and have very low technical efficiency, continuous absorbing SFDI is an available and positive way for central and western regions to improve technical efficiency of service industry. However for the technical efficiency in eastern coastal regions, the level of absorbed SFDI is beyond the optimal value in the "inverse U shape", therefore the reasonable path for improving technical efficiency in eastern coastal regions should focus on other factors rather than increasing level of SFDI.
