Abstract: The study sets out to investigate the level and the influencing mechanism of knowledge sharing among Chinese universities. We propose a conceptual model of knowledge sharing on the basis of knowledge governance among scientific research teams. Within the Chinese context, this paper analyzes how knowledge governance impacts on knowledge sharing through the mediation of sense of ownership as well as the moderation of disciplinal commitment and research network. A questionnaire survey involving 409 team members in Chinese universities indicates: a) that knowledge governance, whether formal or informal, has an effect on knowledge sharing, b) that sense of ownership, with distinctive Chinese characteristics, mediates partially formal knowledge governance and knowledge sharing, and serves as a whole mediation between informal knowledge governance and knowledge sharing, and c) that disciplinal commitment can moderate the relations between informal knowledge sharing governance and knowledge sharing, whereas research network moderates the interaction between formal knowledge governance and knowledge sharing.
