A study on the mechanisms by which harmony culture enhances firms′ innovation willingness and capabilities

Abstract:     Corporate cultural values are the fundamental factors determining innovation willingness and capability. This study, based on the context of Chinese culture and management, used machine learning to measure harmony culture in a large sample of A-share listed companies and empirically examined its relationship with corporate innovation behavior. The results showed that harmony culture can effectively enhance the willingness and capability of enterprises to innovate. The innovation intention of enterprises is easily driven by culture, but improving innovation capability can only be achieved by cooperation between different dimensions of culture. Although the harmony culture with Chinese characteristics can significantly improve the innovation capability of enterprises, it will be frustrated under the pressure environment caused by internal and external uncertainties. The mechanism study showed that harmony culture can promote innovation by building good government-enterprise and alliance relations. From a unique perspective of local culture, this paper has revealed the motivation of the values of enterprises′ innovation willingness and capability, empirically tested the interaction and balance between cultures of different dimensions, and revealed the charm and function of harmony culture with Chinese characteristics.
