Research on the mechanism of innovative leader to promote employees′ radical innovation

Abstract:    Innovative leader is an important factor affecting employees′ innovation. However, in the context of increasingly prominent importance of innovation, how innovative leader affects employees′ radical innovation has not been answered by existing studies. Based on the functional leadership theory and the social information processing theory, this study constructed a mediating model of the influence of innovative leader on employees′ radical innovation, and explored the moderating effect of traditionality. Based on the three-wave data of 53 enterprise leaders and 315 subordinate employees, the cross-hierarchical regression and R mediation analysis were carried out. The results showed that innovative leader has a significant role in promoting organizational innovation climate and employees′ radical innovation behavior. Organizational innovation climate plays a significant role in promoting employees′ radical innovation behavior. Organizational innovation climate plays a positive mediating role in the influence of innovative leader on employees′ radical innovation behavior. Traditionality negatively moderates the relationship between organizational innovation climate and employees′ radical innovation behavior. The study has highlighted the value of innovative leader in influencing employee innovation, provided a unique theoretical perspective for understanding the specific mechanism of innovative leader′s impact on employees′ radical innovation behavior, and will provide some theoretical and practical reference for stimulating employees′ radical innovation behavior from the perspective of leadership and organizational innovation climate.
