Abstract: From the perspective of resource type and cooperative risks, a concept model and some research hypotheses about the issue of alliance structure choice in a scale competitive alliance are proposed. The direct and indirect impacts among resource type, cooperative risks, and preference of alliance structure are estimated with the structural equation model and mediation analysis. It is found that there are indeed close relationships among these three variables. First, the correlations between cooperative risk and alliance structure are significant. Second, the resource type impacts the structure decision both directly and indirectly, with a higher ratio of indirect influence through cooperative risks. These results demonstrate that partners in a scale competitive alliance decide the alliance structure mainly according to the cooperative risks from the ex ante aspect.
