Abstract:    In exploring the impact of overseas talent return to China on enterprise technological innovation, existing research primarily focused on the direct innovative effects of returnees but overlooked the influence of indirect innovation effects brought by enterprises′ increased pre-investment in resources. Based on this premise, this paper, through theoretical and empirical analyses, selected the panel data from 30 provincial-level regions in  China from 2009 to 2018 as the research sample. A panel model was constructed, and a mixed regression estimation method was applied to empirically investigate the impact patterns of R&D funding innovation effects and R&D talent innovation effects of overseas talent return to China on enterprise technological innovation at both national and regional levels. The study results indicated that: first, the indirect innovation effects of returnees include both R&D funding innovation effects and R&D talent innovation effects. Second, the indirect innovation effects of overseas talent return to China have a significantly positive influence on enterprise technological innovation. Third, the impact of R&D talent innovation effects of returnees on enterprise technological innovation is more significant than the impact of R&D funding innovation effects. Fourth, regional differences exist in the influence of R&D funding innovation effects on enterprise technological innovation. In the eastern and western regions of China, the enhancement of R&D funding innovation effects has a positive impact on enterprise technological innovation, while in the central region of China, this impact is not significant. This study explored the indirect impact of proactive resource investment by enterprises in competing for high-level returned talents on technological innovation in the context of global talent competition and large-scale return of overseas talents. It confirmed the role of indirect innovation effects of overseas talent return to China on enterprise technological innovation, expands existing research, and provides a fresh perspective.
