绩效反馈强度与持续性对负责任创新的影响研究
Research on the impacts of the intensity and duration of performance feedback on responsible innovation
In the background of self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology, responsible innovation plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of enterprises and society. Although the importance of responsible innovation is widely recognized, the factors that affect the implementation of responsible innovation in enterprises are still unclear. Based on the behavioral theory of firms, this research explored the differentiated impact of the intensity and duration of positive performance feedback on responsible innovation, and the moderating effects of managerial myopia and TMT age heterogeneity. This paper selected Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2019 as the research sample and adopted the fixed effect model to test the research hypothesis. The results showed that the intensity of positive performance feedback has an inverted U-shaped impact on responsible innovation, while the duration of positive performance feedback has a positive impact on responsible innovation. Further analysis demonstrated that managerial myopia weakens the relationship between the duration of positive performance feedback and responsible innovation, while TMT age heterogeneity weakens both the relationships between the intensity and duration of positive performance feedback and responsible innovation. The conclusions are still valid after various robustness and endogeneity tests. These findings will not only enrich the behavioral theory of the firm, reveal the impact mechanisms of different dimensions of positive performance feedback on responsible innovation, but also provide important management implications for promoting Chinese enterprises to participate in responsible innovation and achieve sustainable development.

This study reviews research on the social, behavioral, and cognitive influences on CEOs, top management teams (TMTs), and the CEO-TMT interface during strategic decision making. We identify the key issues examined in this research over the past 10 years and relate developments in the field to previous knowledge in this area. We also attempt to identify what constitutes an established body of knowledge in the field and, therefore, areas that need additional examination. Our review indicates that while there has been an explosion of research on the influence of CEO personality and TMT social processes on strategy process, much remains to be done in terms of examining CEO and TMT cognition, particularly at the level of the CEO-TMT interface.

Although corporate social performance has become an important measure of firm performance, there is little understanding about how firms respond to social performance feedback and how impression management may function as an important firm response to the feedback. Building upon and extending the literature on the behavioral theory of the firm and the strategic use of language, we examine how discrepancies between firms’ social performance and their aspiration levels affect how firms use visual expressions in their CSR reports. In addition, we argue that the relationship between social performance discrepancies and the use of visual expressions in CSR reports is moderated by the extent to which firms conduct socially responsible activities to enhance legitimacy (reflected in the level of state ownership) and the extent to which firms engage in social activities to improve financial performance (reflected in foreign exposure). Using a sample of Chinese firms issuing CSR reports from 2009 to 2017, our empirical results provide strong support for these arguments.

We draw on the signaling and infomediary literature to examine how media evaluations of CEO overcompensation (a negative cue associated with selfishness and greed) are affected by the presence of corporate philanthropy (a positive cue associated with altruism and generosity). In line with our theory on signal incongruence, we find that firms engaged in philanthropy receive more media disapproval when they overcompensate their CEO, but they are also more likely to decrease CEO overcompensation as a response. Our study contributes to the signaling literature by theorizing about signal incongruence and to infomediary and corporate governance research by showing that media disapproval can lead to lower executive compensation. We also reconcile two conflicting views on firm prosocial behavior by showing that, in the presence of incongruent cues, philanthropy can simultaneously enhance and damage media evaluations of firms and CEOs. Taken together, these findings shed new light on the media as agents of external corporate governance for firms and open new avenues for research on executive compensation.

Risky organizational decisions are frequently made within the confines of performance periods with predefined durations and deadlines for achieving desired levels of performance. The relationship between performance and risk taking has been studied mostly across such periods but rarely within them. Building on the shifting-focus-of-attention model of organizational risk taking, we argue that the temporal proximity of deadlines regulates the focus of organizational attention within a performance period. Decision makers will focus their attention on attaining and maintaining aspirations early in a period; however, as deadlines approach, decision makers in underperforming firms will increasingly be likely to focus on ensuring survival, whereas decision makers in outperforming firms will increasingly be likely to focus on experimenting with slack resources. We propose that the relationship between performance and risk taking should thus be moderated by deadline proximity within a performance period. We tested and found support for our hypotheses in the context of 22,603 fourth-down decisions made by the 32 National Football League teams during the 2000–2005 regular season games. Our findings suggest that the notion of temporally bound performance periods and deadline proximity should play a more central role in attention-based frameworks of organizational risk taking.

In the perspectives of upper echelon theory, the social relationship embedded ness theory and the legitimacy theory, the study discusses the mediating mechanism of top management team’s social relationship heterogeneity on the relationship between its structure heterogeneity and corporate social responsibility performance. Using the sample of China’s A share listed companies from 2011 to 2017, the Heckman’s two-stage regression method is used for empirical testing. We find a significant negative relationship between top management team’s age heterogeneity and corporate social responsibility performance, and the relationship heterogeneity can ease the negative impact. The structure heterogeneity in gender, education and tenure has a significant positive impact on corporate social responsibility performance, but the mediating effect of relationship heterogeneity hasn’t been proved by sufficient empirical evidence.

This paper presents an examination of the role played by alliance learning in enabling emerging market small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop responsible innovation. SMEs based in emerging markets face significant challenges due to their weak resource base and the limited support they receive from formal institutions. In such a context, we argued that alliance learning takes a more prominent role in enabling these firms to develop responsible innovation via their absorptive capacity and sense-making competency. Drawn from 176 survey responses from SMEs originating from Pakistan, our findings shed light on the vital role played by alliance learning in enhancing SMEs’ responsible innovation. Specifically, the findings indicate that absorptive capacity acts as an important mechanism between alliance learning and responsible innovation. In addition, sense-making competency emerges as an important boundary condition and as a vital dynamic capability under which the effects of alliance learning on responsible innovation are stronger through the mediating mechanisms of absorptive capacity. These moderating-mediating findings contribute to the literature on dynamic capabilities and responsible innovation and provide important insights into the mechanisms and boundary conditions of responsible innovation in the context of emerging Asian markets.
