Abstract

Supply chain digitalization serves as a core engine driving corporate green technology innovation. Using a sample of China's A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2023, this study constructs an empirical model incorporating third-order interaction effects to systematically examine the impact mechanism of supply chain digitalization on green technology innovation. It particularly highlights the moderating roles of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and Absorptive Capacity (AC), as well as the higher-order influence of Supply Chain Finance (SCF) on these moderating effects. The findings indicate that supply chain digitalization significantly promotes corporate green technology innovation, an effect that remains robust after a series of robustness tests. Further analysis reveals that the driving path exhibits asymmetric characteristics when confronted with external intervention. Absorptive Capacity strengthens the positive impact of digitalization on green innovation by enhancing knowledge integration and transformation efficiency. This enhancing effect is not disrupted by the short-term nature of supply chain finance. Conversely, the moderating role of ESG performance exhibits conditionality. Its long-term value orientation requires sustained strategic commitment from firms, rendering it susceptible to suppression by the short-term profit-seeking nature of supply chain finance. This highlights the inherent tension between strategic commitment and operational efficiency. Although supply chain finance can enhance short-term capital efficiency, its near-term financial orientation weakens ESG's enabling effect on green innovation. This study not only unveils the black box of how digital supply chains translate into green innovation and elucidates the synergy and conflict between long-term strategy and short-term tactics in corporate green innovation, but also provides targeted theoretical foundations and practical pathways for firms to optimize digital supply chain governance and balance sustainable transformation with short-term operational efficiency.

Understanding sources of sustained competitive advantage has become a major area of research in strategic management. Building on the assumptions that strategic resources are heterogeneously distributed acrossfirms and that these differences are stable over time, this article examines the link betweenfirm resources and sustained competitive advantage. Four empirical indicators of the potential of firm resources to generate sustained competitive advantage-value, rareness, imitability, and substitutability-are discussed. The model is applied by analyzing the potential of severalfirm resourcesfor generating sustained competitive advantages. The article concludes by examining implications of this firm resource model of sustained competitive advantage for other business disciplines.

Kouvelis P, Xu Y. A supply chain theory of factoring and reverse factoring[J]. Management Science, 2021, 67(10):6071-6088.
Factoring is a financial arrangement where the supplier sells accounts receivable to the factor against a premium and receives cash for immediate working capital needs. Reverse factoring takes advantage of the retailer’s payment guarantee and the credit rating differential between a small supplier and a large retailer, enabling the supplier to receive financing at a more favorable rate. We develop a supply chain theory of (recourse/non-recourse) factoring and reverse factoring showing when these post-shipment financing schemes should be adopted and who really benefits from the adoption. We find that recourse factoring is preferred when the supplier’s credit rating is relatively high, whereas non-recourse factoring is preferred within certain medium range of ratings. Both factoring schemes, if adopted, benefit both the supplier and the retailer, and thus the overall supply chain. Further, we find that reverse factoring may not always be preferred by suppliers compared to recourse and non-recourse factorings. Retailers should only offer reverse factoring to suppliers with low (but above a threshold) to medium credit ratings. The optimally designed reverse factoring program can always increase the retailer’s profit, but it may leave the supplier indifferent to the current factoring option when followed by an aggressive payment extension. More importantly, contrary to conventional wisdom, our theory implies that reverse factoring could be adopted even when the retailer has no credit rating advantage over the supplier, and it could benefit the retailer even without extending payment terms.

Recently, in response to the credit crunch and the increased costs of financing, new solutions for supporting the financial management of supply chains, known as supply chain finance (SCF), have been developed. They exploit the strengths of supply chain links to optimise working capital. The purpose of this paper is to provide a reference framework that links together the objectives leading to the adoption of SCF solutions and several moderating variables.

Taking the small and medium-sized board manufacturing enterprises from 2010 to 2016 as samples, this study uses fixed effect regression model to empirically analyze the impact of finance oriented and supply chain oriented supply chain finance on the performance of core enterprises, and uses the data from 2017 to 2019 to test the robustness. The results show that finance oriented supply chain financial activities can not reduce the risk of enterprises, and the impact on operational efficiency is inverted U-shaped. Supply chain oriented supply chain financial activities can significantly improve operational efficiency and reduce enterprise risk. Finance oriented supply chain finance can increase financial performance, while supply chain oriented supply chain financial activities and financial performance exist inverted U relationship.

Buyers increasingly offer financing alternatives to their suppliers - so called supply chain finance (SCF) practices for the supply side. Expected benefits however do not always materialize for involved actors. Guidance is needed when to provide these SCF practices to suppliers and why to select different types of practices. To provide this guidance, the paper involves an exploratory multiple-case study design including data within eight buyer-supplier-financial service provider triads. The findings explain contextual situations for the provision of SCF practices based on the contingency approach. They distinguish endogenous, relationship-related and exogenous contingencies within the aforementioned triads. Differentiation criteria are determined for the selection of SCF practices along the dimensions 'time of financing' (pre- versus post-shipment) and 'source of funds' (supply chain internal and external). Testable propositions and key learnings summarize the derived findings and form the basis to develop a contingency framework on SCF practices for the supply side.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the instrumental role of supply chains in delivering economic, human, and societal value. At the same time, the pandemic has intensified interest among businesses, governments, and academics to examine environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. In today’s hyper-globalized economy, ESG measures are futile unless they explicitly incorporate a firm’s end-to-end operations throughout its entire supply chain. On the other hand, well-calibrated ESG measures should play a central role in guiding a firms’ day-to-day supply chain management practices. To illustrate the value of unifying ESG and end-to-end supply chain thinking, we present three supply chain cases that arose amid the COVID-19 pandemic, involving online platforms; public health supply chains; and vaccine development, manufacturing, and distribution, respectively. Drawn from these three cases, we spotlight some new research opportunities in both ESG and supply chain management.
