数字化业务组合多样性对企业创新绩效的影响研究
The impact of digital business portfolio diversity on firms' innovation performance
数字化转型是企业提质增效、推动创新发展的关键战略举措,然而不少企业却出现了不会转、不敢转的困境。因此,如何在资源有限的情况下有效配置数字化业务成为了转型发展的关键问题。本文基于吸收能力视角,探究数字化业务组合多样性对企业创新绩效的非线性影响,并分析人工智能技术和制度环境的调节作用。基于2007—2021年中国上市公司数据,采用负二项回归模型,研究发现:(1)数字化业务组合多样性对创新绩效具有倒U型影响,即多样性增加初期有利于提升绩效,过度多样性则产生负面效应;(2)人工智能技术负向调节该关系,原因在于其可加速知识获取,提升异质性知识的利用效率;(3)产品市场发展水平正向调节该关系,发达的产品市场一方面强化了企业对多样化数字业务的知识获取,另一方面也加大了异质性知识的整合难度。研究结果有助于深化企业数字化转型吸收能力视角下创新绩效的理论解释,为企业数字化业务决策和政府政策制定提供理论依据和实践启示。
Digital transformation is a critical strategic initiative for enterprises to enhance efficiency and foster innovation. However, many firms encounter challenges in transitioning, such as hesitancy and incapacity, making the effective allocation of limited resources to digital business portfolios a key issue for successful transformation. Drawing on the absorptive capacity perspective, this paper examined the nonlinear impact of digital business portfolio diversity on innovation performance and explored the moderating effects of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the institutional environment. Using panel data from Chinese listed companies from 2007 to 2021 and employing a negative binomial regression model, the study found that:(1) Digital business portfolio diversity exhibits an inverted U-shaped relationship with innovation performance, where its impact first rises and then falls as diversity increases. (2) AI technology negatively moderates this relationship by enabling firms to rapidly acquire and utilize heterogeneous knowledge more efficiently. (3) Product market development positively moderates this relationship, as advanced product markets enhance knowledge acquisition from diverse portfolios but also increase the complexity of utilizing heterogeneous knowledge. These findings deepen the theoretical understanding of innovation performance during digital transformation from the absorptive capacity perspective, and will offer valuable implications for corporate strategy and policy-making in the digital era.

不同的异质性知识来源会影响到企业知识的获取成本及其整合效率,因此可能会催生不同的创新绩效。本研究选取上海、江苏和浙江261个创新类企业为样本,考察企业已有内部知识结构的异质度(内部知识异质度)伙伴企业之间的知识异质度(外部知识异质度)分别对创新绩效的直接影响,以及战略柔性如何对两种关系产生调节效应。结果表明:外部知识异质度对创新绩效具有倒U效应;内部知识异质度对创新绩效仅仅存在正向的线性效应,没有曲线效应;不同类型的战略柔性对内、外部知识异质度与创新绩效关系具有不同的调节效应,其中资源柔性仅仅对内部知识异质度和创新绩效关系具有显著的正向调节效应,而协调柔性仅仅对外部知识异质度和创新绩效关系具有显著的正向调节效应。本研究为企业利用内、外部异质性知识和提高创新绩效提供了理论解释和参考。

Based on the knowledge-based view, this study investigates how firms' information technology (IT) capability broadens and deepens their knowledge base, which consequently improves digital innovation. In the context of Industry 4.0, corporate social responsibility (CSR) plays an increasingly important role in firm risk management. To mitigate risk and improve operational productivity, artificial intelligence (AI), a key disruptive technology, has been increasingly employed in many industries. In this study, we examine the relationship between CSR and idiosyncratic risk (IR) as moderated by AI innovation and operational efficiency based on data from 1614 firms in China during the period from 2010 to 2017. The empirical results show that CSR can negatively affect IR, while beyond a certain level, it acts in the opposite direction, exhibiting a U‐shaped relationship. In particular, operational efficiency shifts the turning point of the U‐shaped curve to the right, implying that firms with high operational efficiency can obtain a higher optimal benefit by improving their CSR. Furthermore, AI innovation flattens the U‐shaped curve, thereby weakening CSR's positive impact on IR. This result indicates that AI innovation is not always beneficial. As AI innovation can have some substitution effect on CSR, enterprises should focus on either CSR or AI innovation as their main differentiation strategy to maximize the utilization of resources. We further instrument CSR using the social expenditure ratio of the province where the firm is headquartered to address a potential endogeneity concern. Finally, we provide several prominent managerial implications for enterprises, governments, and investors.

This paper applies upper echelons theory to investigate whether chief information officers (CIOs) and boards of directors affect the development of AI orientation, which represents firms’ overall strategic direction and goals regarding the introduction and application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. We tested our model using a dataset drawn from 1,454 publicly listed firms in China. Our findings show that the presence of a CIO positively influences AI orientation and that board educational diversity, R&D experience, and AI experience positively moderate the CIO’s effect on AI orientation. Our post hoc analysis further demonstrates that these board characteristics represent contingencies that impact AI orientation but not conventional IT orientation. This paper contributes to the upper echelons literature and IT management research by offering contextualized arguments that explain new business and IT strategies such as AI orientation. Further, our findings suggest important implications about how to build top management teams and boards capable of effectively developing AI orientations.
